Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons
Written in 1932 as a parody of the romantic, doom laden accounts of rural life which were very popular then.
Flora Poste, orphaned at 19, goes to stay with relatives on their farm in Sussex. They are almost all living comedically miserable lives, which Flora then makes it her mission to improve.

The parody was mostly lost on the group as we hadn’t read the originals. However most of the group found it a light, easy read, unbelievable but entertaining and funny.
A couple of our group really disliked the book and didn’t finish it.
The average score out of 10 was 6 ½
