The book was finished by many to confirm expectations of the outcome, which were felt to be predictable, rather than enjoyment. The characterization was two dimensional so no empathy for the characters was generated. The plot reflected the periods of time it covered and drew on items covered in the news;eg The Magdalene Laundries, domestic abuse, the latter making for difficult reading at times. There were a number, too many? coincidences used to advance the narrative.
The writing did not recommend any enthusiasm to read any other books she may have written.
